ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Sports Journalism is in a time of transition to begin 2024.
The start of 2024 has been a tough start for the sports journalism, with the company that owns Sports Illustrated announcing it has planning to laid off most of the iconic newspaper's staff, the Los Angeles Times laying off more than 20% of its newsroom, and the Messenger shutting down after just eight months.
The Sporting News hasn't been immune to it either. The longtime print magazine, which was founded right here in St. Louis, announced that they set to layoff staff members.
"You look back at it and as a kid who had a Sporting News subscription with his name on it and paid for by his allowance it was pretty cool to do for a while," said Ryan Fagan, a national baseball writer who spent nearly two decades at the former magazine-turned-online outlet.
Fagan was one of the most prominent writers at the outlet to have been laid off in 2024. On Tuesday, Fagan discussed the current state of Sports Journalism on Total Information A.M., discussing the current state of industry, discussing his experience being laid off by the Sporting News and the future and path of the industry. Along that he also discussed some Cardinals topics as Spring Training nears.
