ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis City seniors are one step closer to seeing their property taxes frozen.
Alderwoman Anne Schweitzer's bill freezing property taxes was passed out of the Budget and Public Employees Committee on Wednesday.
Alderwoman Schweitzer says this does mean the city would take back less tax revenue from senior citizens.
"The fiscal impact would be that every year the city would be taking less from a senior if they own a home than they would if this bill didn't pass," said Schweitzer.
Schweitzer says her bill is different from the property tax bill St. Louis County passed in October. The St. Louis County version includes freezing property taxes for other taxing districts such as schools, while the City's is exempting taxing districts like schools.
"We've chosen to focus solely on the City's portion of the tax because we believe it is manageable," said Schweitzer. "As well it is the dually responsible thing to do for other taxing districts."
The average savings a household with their property taxes frozen would be $50 to $75 in the first year but would grow from there as the tax continues tp remain frozen.
The bill now advances to the full Board of Aldermen.
