COTTLEVILLE, MO (KMOX) - After beginning the year mask-optional, three Archdiocesan schools in St. Charles County are now requiring students and staff to wear masks and some parents aren't happy about it.

KMOX has learned that some parents may pull their children out of St. Joseph School in Cottleville because of the change. St. Louis Archdiocese spokesman Peter Frangie says St. Joseph, and the other schools, have been very clear that they will adjust their policy as necessary.

"In this situation," Fangie says, "they have seen they have enough in the way of cases and instances of the COVID-19 virus that they needed to make a change."

Frangie says while the schools started the semester without a mandate, they were clear that that could change.

"They're going to be very in tune to what the environment is in regards to the COVID-19 virus, and will make adjustments as they see what is needed to address any concerns that they may have," he says.

In a letter to parents, St. Joseph Principal Sister Kateri Rose Masters says the decision was made after school nurses met with the county health department. She writes that requiring masks will allow close contacts of COVID-positive people to remain in class, rather than having to quarantine at home.

St. Joachim & Ann Catholic School issued the mask mandate before St. Joseph. The name of the third school has not been released yet.
