ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A member of the St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station has died. Its giant Pacific octopus, named Fluffy, recently died, according to a post on Facebook.

"Fluffy was a wonderful ambassador for her species, showing off her intelligence by squeezing through the tunnel that connects the two sides of her habitat, solving puzzles as a form of enrichment and even painting a few masterpieces," the statement read. "Her legacy lives on in the hearts of the Aquarium team and all of our guests who had the chance to get to know her over the past year."

The Aquarium says her species has a lifespan of just 2-3 years and that hers was "happy and healthy."

"Octopuses show very specific end of life behaviors, so the team was aware and made her as comfortable as possible during this last phase of her life, known as senescence," the Aquarium stated.

One of the latest major attractions to open in St. Louis, the Aquarium celebrated its one-year anniversary of opening in December. They house about 13,000 animals, feature 44 exhibits and have 257 different species of fish and wildlife.
