St. Louis City is one step closer to regulating data centers.
An Aldermanic committee approved a bill regulating the quickly emerging industry. Included in the requirement: clean energy mandates.
Alderwoman Anne Schweitzer tells KMOX data centers will be required to utilize a certain percentage of clean energy to operate or fund clean energy projects through credits from day one.
"Twenty-five percent of the energy used by the facility, they have to be able to prove that it can be from renewable energy."
The bill now heads to the full Board of Aldermen where President Megan Green has already announced two special meetings to allow the bill to see a final vote before summer recess.
Alderwoman Anne Schweitzer says her bill requires data centers to meet certain clean energy milestones, and bans them from being built too close to schools, parks and residential areas.
