ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOX) - A Missouri politician shared a gruesome photo of the St. Louis County correctional officer recovering in a hospital bed after a male inmate attacked her. The 19-year-old inmate has been charged with first-degree assault.

The attack happened on Wednesday after guard Chrissy Nieto told Carnell Robinson Jr., 19, that he had reached his time limit on a phone call and he refused to return to his cell. Another inmate stopped the beating.
Nieto was conscious and speaking the next day after suffering serious injuries to her face and hands.
"He took it upon himself to do the unthinkable. He struck her in the face 30 times," Missouri State Representative Kimberly Ann-Collins told KSDK, sharing the below photo of the guard:
She is blaming the incident on understaffing, as the St. Louis County Jail in Clayton is down 78 corrections officers out of 170 budgeted positions.
St. Louis County spokesman Doug Moore said the guard was able to push an emergency button and other guards arrived within a minute to intervene. He says jail guards are armed with pepper spray but are not allowed to have a stun gun or firearm.
Police are seeking charged against the inmate for the beating. He was detained on a first-degree robbery charge in St. Louis County but also faces felony charges for shooting at a vehicle and tampering with a witness in St. Louis.
