CLAYTON (KMOX) - Featuring what a chef calls "the best pasta you can buy in the world," a new Italian restaurant recently opened in St. Louis County has been dubbed the best new U.S. restaurant of its kind.
Forbes.com contributor Katie Kelly Bell, an experienced food writer, posted a story about the debut of Casa Don Alfonso that opened in March inside the newly renovated Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis. She called the restaurant "America's Best New Italian Restaurant."
Casa Don Alfonso is operated by the same family who owns the internationally acclaimed Don Alfonso 1890, located in Southern Italy. The new St. Louis location has also been named one of the best Italian restaurants in the US by Fodors.com.
St. Louis has already been well-known for its Italian cuisine thanks to The Hill neighborhood which hosts some of the best grub in town. CEO of Don Alfonso 1890, Mario Iaccarino, said he was welcomed to St. Louis "like family."
"When residents from The Hill came to eat at Casa Don Alfonso and I heard them say, ‘Mario, I am dreaming of home, of my childhood.’ Well, then I knew we were going in the right direction," he told Forbes.
The restaurant features a house sauce with tomatoes grown on the slopes of Vesuvius. Its menu has inspiration from his grandmother's cookbook, which contains 2,000 years of cooking history. Bell notes the Grandma’s Ziti and Maccheroni Grati as standouts on the menu, but also speaks highly of the wood-fired pizza.
You can visit Casa Don Alfonso Tuesday through Sunday for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
