'Something I will never unsee'┃St. Louis man witnessed NYE murder in downtown

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Braxton Payne has often been a guest on KMOX to discuss business and political news and trends, but this time he joined us to tell a horrific story of what he witness on New Year's Eve in downtown St. Louis.

He saw a man who had just been shot and killed, lying on the ground with two gunshot wounds to his head. It happened about 10 feet away from him while at his company's holiday party.

"I heard two gun shots, and I knew instantly," Payne says, who is the Director of Digital Communications with Show Me Victories. "The window had been cracked and I looked outside the window within 10 seconds. I saw a man, and I'm not a doctor, but he was dead."

It happened outside Blood and Sands restaurant, near 15th and Locust streets around 10 p.m. Friday night. Payne tweeted about the event the next day, saying it's "something that I will never unsee."

He lauded the St. Louis Police Department officers who responded, within seconds, to the shooting scene and stated how even though they're greatly shorthanded, they still helped escort everyone to their homes and vehicles nearby.

Payne said it's not a political statement, but in joining KMOX's Charlie Brennan Show With Amy Marxkors discussed what he believes needs to change with policing in St. Louis.

"I am very sympathetic and very supportive of alternative ways of policing," Payne says. "I do think there needs to be more focus on mental health and training our officers to deal with mental health situation. But I've always been very supportive of the police."

Payne says he didn't see who shot the man that night.

Police say the shooting is under investigation and have not released any further information about the man killed or possible suspects.
