Rebecca Ann Goetz was a "Diversion Specialist," whose job was to help young offenders to avoid prison time through counseling and alternative sentences. According to her attorney, Goetz says the moment of truth was at a meeting attended by about ten staffers. She says it was a "very rough situation with people saying she could not do her job because she was white."

The suit claims Gardner was in the meeting but said nothing to stop the race-based criticism. A few days after the meeting, Goetz claims she was fired without explanation.

A spokesperson for Kim Gardner issued a statement saying, "We deny that the office engaged in any wrongful conduct and we intend to defend this action vigorously."
