St. Louis police warn residents about spree of vehicle thefts at gas stations [ VIDEO ]


ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Police are warning residents to be careful at gas stations in a certain area of St. Louis that has seen dozens of thefts in recent months. They shared video of how criminals are stealing cars.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department says there have been 17 stolen vehicle and 11 vehicle larceny reports at BP, QuickTrip, Phillip 66, Amoco and Circle K gas stations throughout District 2. That includes major neighborhoods like Botanical Gardens, Clayton/Tamm, Forest Park, Hi-Point, Shaw, St. Louis Hills, The Hill, Tiffany, Tower Grove Park, Wydown/Skinker and portions of South Hampton.

Police say was typically happens is suspects will pull up to a victim’s vehicle while getting gas or airing their tires. A passenger of the suspect's vehicle will jumps into the victim's unlocked car and if the keys are inside, they'll drive off, or they will steal valuables.

"In most cases, the key fob is left in the car, making it easy for a suspect to drive away with their car," police say.

They shared video of one incident that took place at the Amoco gas station near Forest Park at 981 S. Skinker Blvd.

"At this time, we do not have anyone available for an interview as these investigations are still ongoing. However, we are requesting your assistance with raising awareness and alerting citizens to be vigilant about these types of crimes. Anyone with information can call a 2nd District Detective at 314-444-0100," police say.
