ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - "We were at about 93% of capacity," says Marc Schreiber, President, St. Louis Sports Commission, about this past weekend's NCAA tournament games. St. Louis played host to the first and second rounds of NCAA men's basketball. (Listen to his interview with Megan Lynch on KMOX's Total Information AM by clicking the link below.)
St. Louis tips off March Madness
As far as the economic impact of all those visitors, "If we had to sort of put a guesstimate on it, just based on what we know from past events and what the first and second rounds do and our draw with teams, I'd say it's probably in the 12 to 15 million dollar range." Schreiber says anecdotally, Union Station reported a record-setting weekend for its restaurants and attractions. "With all that comes through here and to be able to have a weekend like that for one of our partners in the community, that certainly says a lot."
He points out, a successful NCAA event is the best game plan for attracting future college tournaments to St. Louis, ""this summer we're going to bid on the next cycle of NCAA champtionships. It's three years of bids across all sports. So we needed this to be a solid weekend."
