St. Louis woman who's lived on Hermitage Ave. for 70 years says she's never seen rain like this

Flooding on Hermitage Ave during record rainfall in St. Louis

Joan Bonnell got up early this morning after a neighbor on Hermitage Ave. pounded on her door telling her to move her car. The streets were flooding, and as the water rose, neighbors were being rescued by boat. Cars became submerged on her block as she and her neighbors looked on.

Bonnell has lived in her home on Hermitage for 70 years and has never seen any rain like this.

"Yeah, this is a mess," Bonnell said. "In 1957, it came up. There's a lot on the other side of this house, but it was nothing like this."

Bonnell said she and her neighbors watched as the rain continued to pour down.

"We got cars moved, and then we just sat here and watched it come up further and further and further," she said. "And then it came in the door, as you can see that line on the siding."

St. Louis broke a more than 100 year record for rainfall, with 8.06 inches of rain between midnight and 7 a.m. Tuesday.
