ST. CHARLES (KMOX) - St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann will seek re-election after all.

Five time incumbent Steve Ehlmann made the announcement first on KMOX's the Chris and Amy Show. Ehlmann previously announced he would not run again but now says the changing political landscape changed his mind.

Ehlmann says "I have a great county council that works with me, I've got the right people in place now in Washington D.C., in Jefferson City and at East West Gateway."

Ehlmann says this has him more optimistic for progress in St. Charles County in a long time and he wants to be a part of that.

Former Republican State Senator Bill Eigel who is running for St. Charles County Executive released the following statement:

Eigel Responds to Incumbent County Executive “Sleepy Steve Ehlmann” Entering the Race

WELDON SPRING, MO“St." Charles County needs bold, conservative leadership to prevent the economic stagnation that has become standard with Steve Ehlmann in recent years."

"Property taxes have never been higher in St. Charles County, soulless apartment complexes are turning St. Charles into St. Louis City 2.0, and corporations are vying for natural resources for their data centers and getting rich off city-driven special tax abatements at the expense of the people."

"All the while, Steve Ehlmann has been sleeping. Literally – sleeping. Steve promised he would retire and let a new generation of energetic, conservative leadership guide our county after he has held that office for more than 20 years. I intend to hold Steve to his commitment on retirement.”
