Police say officers responded to a report of shots being fired inside the Westmoreland Apartments just north of Forest Park at 10 a.m.

Police say two uniformed officers knocked on the door of the unit where shots were heard, but no one answered the door. Officers then broke down the door and confronted a male suspect.

The officers told the suspect to drop his gun, but he refused, police say. The officers and suspect exchanged gunfire and the suspect was shot and killed, police say. Neither officer was injured.

Police say an AR-15 and a pistol were recovered, but it's not clear which weapon the suspect was holding.

Witnesses described hearing a volley of between seven to nine shots.
