GRANITE CITY (KMOX) - A Metro East school district doesn't want students waiting at bus stops for a ride that may never come, so it's giving all fifth through 12th-grade students excused absences if they can't get a ride to school.
The Granite City School District is scaling back it's bus service for the rest of this week due to a "severe" shortage of drivers. A letter from Superintendent Stephanie Cann states that routes are being re-evaluated, but they "anticipate this problem to continue and possibly grow."
This week, only kindergarten through fourth-grade students and special education students of all ages will be guaranteed transportation. All other students will be granted an excused absense.
Since the first day of school Aug. 19, the district has been posting several announcements of bus route changes on social media.
The district says the driver shortage is with its contracted bus company, Illinois Central.
