ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - The past year has been full of uncertainty for many adults. A new survey suggests children may be just as aware of current events.

KMOX Virtual Consumer Editor Megan Lynch learned, that appears to be impacting their sense of safety.

The survey of parents by Safety.com shows kids were exposed to information that made them fearful from a variety of sources, the top being TV and the internet, but also school and peers.

Safety.com Editor Jamie Greenberger tells KMOX the issues that seemed to impact children's fears the most, varied by region. In the northeast COVID was the top concern, in the Midwest, political unrest. "So the hotspot of COVID started in New York, so there's the Northeast, and then political unrest, it was Minnesota where it really just sparked all the riots of 2020," says Greenberger. "We noticed that the events that impacted children's sense of safety the most increased the closer they were to the start of that event."

Overall, parents reported COVID was the top issue impacting their kids' security, followed by political unrest, violence, and online safety.
