ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A Lift for Life Academy school bus engulfed in flames rolls into a home Monday night on Ellington Drive in Normandy.

The bus had just dropped off the last group of kids around 6:15 p.m. when the driver noticed smoke and flames coming from the engine. The driver put the bus in park and got out.

Lift for Life Academy School Director Marshal Cohen said it was most likely a system issue that caused the flames.

"Unfortunately, some systems failed from what we understand. We're still looking into it," Cohen said. "It rolled down and ran into a house, and over the person's car which is very unfortunate."

Cohen said this was a freak accident.

"We're constantly all over repairs and making sure the buses are running at a high level and working properly," Cohen said.

The driver of the bus did end up going to the hospital, but did not suffer from any injuries. Cohen said she was just shaken up.

"The safety of the students and the homeowner [being] safe is the most important thing," Cohen said.

The school has turned the investigation over to their insurance company.
