BRIDGETON, MO (KMOX) - Driver education in high school is not required for teens to get a license, but is that something that should be considered?

There's a program coming to Bridgeton for two weekends called BRAKES, it's a teen proactive driving school and is free.

Central Region Director Don Hughes tells KMOX says the program is for teens 15 to 19 who already have a learner's permit. One of the big problems these days is distractive driving. "People don't know how to address certain situations that come up on the road or have proper driving etiquette. And so I encourage parents to put their teens in some type of driver's education, if they can they can. BRAKES is going to be a part of that driving education part. BRAKES is something I want them to do after the parents drive with them, after they get a new driver's education hopefully and then BRAKES would be like the three step in that three step process."

Hughes says the teens must have good role models to look at and develop good driving skills. While your school may not offer driver's ed, Hughes says sign your teens up and get them enrolled in one of the two BRAKES programs in June.

In the BRAKES program teenagers will be put through the five top reasons teens are crashing.

The BRAKES program is being offered twice, this weekend, June 3rd and 4th and again, June 10th and 11th.
