GODFREY, IL (KMOX) - The US Defense Secretary wants to test troops for testosterone levels. Health experts are expressing concern that increased use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) could have risks. OSF Medical Group Physician Assistant Lucas Edwards tells KMOX, supplementing testosterone can cause serious health issues.

Edwards says hormone testosterone aids the male physique, helping to build muscle mass and contributing to energy and sex drive. Testosterone naturally starts to decline when men are in their mid-30's. Women also produce testosterone and see a drop after their 40's. Edwards says TRT can increase the likelihood of blood clots. "And also for young men, specifically men who want to have a family, it can also suppress sperm production and affect your fertility."

Edwards say if women use testosterone replacement therapy to boost energy and libido it can increase body and facial hair, but also trigger male-pattern baldness.
