ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A man convicted of Killing a Kirkwood Police officer is being honored on a state-approved Adopt a Highway sign and no one seems to know why.

The sign stiring a controversy, read in "Loving Memory of Kevin Rockhead Johnson." Johnson shot Officer Bill McEntee, and while he was on the ground, Johnson continued to shoot until McEntee died. Johnson was executed last November for the 2007 murder.

KMOX reached out to MODOT for an explanation how the adopt a highway program works, but they declined an interview.

The U-City Police Officer's Association posted a picture of the sign, questioning why it was placed where Kirkwood Police could see it. Both Kirkwood and University City Police have not returned our calls.

The sign has been taken down, though it's not clear who removed it.
