The "sauerkraut diet" is trending - people generally focus on fermented food and protein while cutting out sugar and processed foods.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he lost 20 pounds eating only fermented foods and protein. The vice president and transportation secretary are also loading up on the fermented food.

Michelle Wilson is a Registered Dietician with Branz Nutrition. She says there's a lot to the benefits of sauerkraut.

"I'm a huge fan of food versions of probiotics and I think that's going to be the main benefit that we see."

She says fermented foods are a great addition.

"Probiotics are live, active cultures so we have these bacteria that help us break things down in our gut and we can get those from fermented foods that have this good bacteria in them."

Yogurt is also a good choice....or miso, kimchee and pickles....but don't go full board.

"Definitely don't want to go really intense with a new food because we don't know how our body is going to naturally react to that. Also as our gut bacteria is changing, then we can have some GI distress as we adapt."
