ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A toxicologist testified during day two of the trial of Daniel Riley that he had drugs in his system during the incident that led to a Tennessee volleyball player losing both her legs.
Wednesday marked day two of the trial of Riley, who is facing five charges including assault, armed criminal action, and driving without a valid driver’s license for a reckless driving incident last year that cause Tennessee high school volleyball Janae Edmondson her legs.
Tuesday, the trial began, with opening statements by both sides. The courtroom from Edmondson's father James and another driver. Tuesday also had Assistant Circuit Attorney Adam Field reveal to the jury that Riley tested positive for drugs in his system following the crash.
Wednesday delved into the revelation by Field, with a toxicologist with the Missouri State Highway Patrol testifying that Riley's blood had tested positive for Fentanyl, codeine and THC.
"I was able to confirm THC, which is the active ingredient in marijuana and two of it's metabolites which are hydroxy THC and carboxy THC," said Carey Davis, a toxicologist with the Missouri Highway Patrol Crime Lab. "Also was confirmed was fentanyl and codeine."
Four officers also testified Wednesday and backed up Davis' statements, also noticing Riley was calm after the accident and in the hospital.
"I would say (Riley) was relatively calm for what he just went through," said one officer who watching him at the hospital. "He seemed more concerned about himself than (Edmondson)."
When a prosecutor asked if Riley expressed any concerns or interest in Edmondson after the accident, the officer said Riley didn't, and said Riley was more concerned with what was going to happen to him if he was booked.
Another officer sent to collect his blood said Riley was "nonchalant;" he was calm but he wasn't ever agitated around the officers after the incident. A third officer said Riley was more concerned about some cell phones which were left in his car rather than Edmondson, who lost both her legs.
"(He was) kinda like 'Can we get this over with, can we move on, can you get me down to get booked," said the second officer.
Another expert was brought in and data from Riley's Audi airbag control module revealed Riley accelerated from 5mph to 45mph in the five seconds leading up to the initial collision and the car eclipsed 6,000 rpm, with the brake not being applied at the time of impact.
Meanwhile, the other vehicle Riley collided with was decelerating from 29mph to 27mph and applied the brake 2 seconds prior to impact. It was also determined the other vehicle, struck the rear of the Audi driven by Riley, causing it to rotate into Edmondson.
