Man freed from collapsed trench in Metro East rail yard after being trapped for hours

DUPO, Ill. (KMOX) - A worker was taken to the hospital after being trapped with only his head exposed following a trench collapse in a Metro East rail yard.

The man became trapped around 11:30 a.m. in the Union Pacific railroad yard area near Carondelet Avenue in Dupo, Illinois. He was freed and taken to a hospital around 3:20 p.m., according to KSDK.

The St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency says the worker was conscious and able to talk to rescuers throughout the operation. He body was trapped underground up to his shoulders.

An ARCH Air Medical helicopter was called in to help, as well as first responders with Prairie DuPont, St. Clair Special Emergency Services, St. Louis City and Medstar.

It wasn't immediately clear what led to the collapse and what condition the man was in when taken to the hospital.
