Mother and child critically injured by suspect fleeing police

FERGUSON (KMOX) - A suspect is now in police custody after leading St. Louis County officers on a chase which ended with a violent accident in Ferguson, critically injuring a woman and her young child.

The woman and child were thrown from the vehicle Friday morning when the suspect's car slammed into it at West Florissant and Hudson.

St. Louis County Police Chief Kenneth Gregory says the chase almost didn't get this far, adding, "at one point, the sergeant was in a position to call the pursuit off because the vehicle was headed into a construction zone on 270, but the vehicle made a turn and ended up here."

Investigators say the car, a red Dodge Challenger, was taken in a carjacking that happened overnight Thursday in the city of St. Louis, believed to have been in the 1400 block of Cochran Place.

The suspect that caused the crash was not injured. He is now in police custody. A weapon was recovered.
