Granite City, Ill. (KMOX) - The leader of United Steel Workers union local 1899 has an update regarding U.S. Steel and a dispute over adequate notice not being made this summer for October layoffs at the Granite City Works steel mill.
President Dan Simmons tells KMOX News he sent union members a notice on Tuesday, "I've been in contact with the company, and we're going to resolve this issue with the WARN Act notice violation and their willingness to settle this."
Simmons says U.S. Steel will not admit wrongdoing, but will make all employees covered under the definition of the WARN Act "whole."
He sends his thanks to government leaders at the local , state, and federal level for drawing public attention to the situation.
As for the message for union members who could be laid-off if the remaining blast furnace at Granite City is shut down, Simmons said, "A lot can change in sixty days, I really don't know. I don't even know if they'll (U.S. Steel) still be the owner of the company, if they have three other groups putting in offers as we speak."
