ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Rockwood Summit High School was fined and potentially faces a possible probation for the rest of the school year after a skirmish occurred against a visiting Kansas City High School at the school's semifinal loss in the Class 3 Soccer State Tournament.

On Friday, Nov. 17, East High School from Kansas City, Missouri, defeated Rockwood Summit to 1-0 in overtime to advance to the Class 3 State Championship game. East High School would eventually beat Ladue Horton Watkins to win the Class 3 Tournament.

After the game, a skirmish occurred between Rockwood Summit and East High School soccer players -- and also included both school's coaches.

"(The game) kind of evolved to a small skirmish, there were some pushing and shoving and teams had to be separated, coaches had to be separated," said Jason West, Missouri State High School Activities Association spokesman.

West says the organization doesn't believe the skirmish was race-related. East High School in Kansas City is a inner-suburb school with most of the players on the school's roster being black.

"We believe it had more to do with just the excitement of the game," said West. "It was a state semifinal game between two very good soccer teams that just went after it."

West tells KMOX the organization's board of directors are considering a motion to place both schools on probation for the rest of the academic year. Both schools were also fined $500.

The motion is scheduled to appear during the Board of Directors's meeting, but according to West, it will be discussed Wednesday during the business portion of the meeting.

KMOX has reached out to both Kansas City Public Schools and Rockwood Summit School District for comment on the skirmish.

Kansas City Public Schools tells KMOX they can't comment on an ongoing investigation, while Rockwood Schools didn't return our request for comment Monday.
