Washington University has conducted a review of the WashU Transgender Center, which was the focus of controversy after a former employee, Jamie Reed, alleged that the center provided gender-affirming care for adolescents without proper mental health treatment or parental consent.

WashU found that Reed's claims were "unsubstantiated," and that the patients were treated according to the World Professional Association of Transgender Health's guidance. WPATH's standards are accepted by other major health organizations, like the American Medical Association.

WashU said that patients were given adequate mental health treatment before being given things like puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones. According to the Missouri Independent, less than half of patients were given cross sex hormones, and fewer still were given puberty blockers.

The Independent also reports that since 2018, the center has performed chest surgeries — or top surgery — on six patients. They report that since 2018, the center has not referred anyone for surgery; if parents request it, they will provide a list of doctors to contact, but will not share the patient's medical information.
