While not officially approved, Eli Lilly says it could be an alternative to injectable drugs like Ozempic as a once-a-day pill.

Eli Lilly says a clinical trial of its new weight loss pill was a success.

Lilly already makes the injectable weight loss drugs Zepbound and Mounjaro. Its new daily pill works similarly, with similar results, "About 16 pounds by the end of the trial, on average, after about 40 weeks.”

CBS News Medical Contributor and Editor-at-large for Public Health at KFF Health News, Dr. Celine Gounder, says if future trials go well, the pill could become available next year.

Lilly has already stockpiled over a billion doses of this new pill in advance of the demand.
