"It's one thing to have Elon Musk mad at you, it's a completely other thing to have the SEC mad at you," says author Julie Smith in the latest "What the Media?!!?" podcast. Smith joined KMOX's Megan Lynch to talk about Twitter's former head of security filing complaints with multiple federal agencies, alleging the social medial giant misled regulators about security and fake accounts.
Some are questioning the timing of the complaint by Peiter Zatko, who served as Twitter's security chief until he was fired earlier this year, wondering if it's simply retaliation. "Or it could be that he was let go because he was about to expose all of its shortcomings," suggests Smith.
What could any of this mean for Twitter's loyal users? "It could possibly change if down the road Twitter decides to clean up its act and get rid of all the bots. It could effect user numbers and eventually effect the bottom line." Why? Smith says bots and fake accounts likely help drive engagements on the platform.
