ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A veteran educator and school administrator is stepping up to run for the St. Louis Public School Board.

The wife of former St. Louis Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kelvin Adams, Dr. Karen Collins-Adams, is running for the school board.

Collins-Adams is a veteran educator and administrator in her own right, having been an administrator in other districts and is now project director for the Rising Teachers initiative at Saint Louis University.

KMOX News' interview with Collin-Adams comes a day after an internal audit by St. Louis Public Schools was released to the public, indicating what the culture was like during the troubled administration of former superintendent Keisha Scarlett.

SLPS Board of Education Vice President Matt Davis admitted to KMOX News that the hiring of Scarlett was a hard lesson learned.

Collin-Adams was asked 'Total Information A.M.' about her assessment of the district and she says the district "has disappointed the community."

"When you have financial issues, it signals something is wrong with leadership," said Collin-Adams to KMOX News.

Collins-Adams tells KMOX what she feels the board needs to do to move on from recent controversy.

Collin-Adams also goes on to elaborate that the district needs to focus on fiscal accountability.

She says while she might take input from her husband if she's elected, but she thinks on her own.

"I have my own thoughts and processes for the way things should operate," said Collin-Adams. "I have experienced those things. I know it from the inside out."

"I bring challenges to the school board and strong thought processes. Although I would welcome the advice from anyone, including my husband, I think on my own."

"I think on the board, we need to start planning how to rebuild the confidence from the community so that things can start growing," said Collins-Adams. "We need to monitor what's going on in our district and we need to adjust all of our conversations to follow what's written in policy."
