ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A early Wednesday morning abduction of woman in Clayton lead to the woman being fatally shot, St. Louis Metropolitan Police confirmed on Thursday.

According to St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, on Wednesday morning, a woman, later identified as 37-year-old Michelle Hampton, encountered a male suspect in Clayton who was armed and abducted her, forcing her to drive from Clayton to City of St. Louis.

During this encounter, Samantha, the sister of Hampton, along with Hampton's two nephews, were following.

One of Hampton's nephews, Julius Cockrell, told KMOX News partner FOX 2, one of the suspects fired the gunshot at them near Kingshighway and Delmar Boulevards. The bullet broke the glass on their vehicle, but nobody was injured.

Later in the day, around 11 a.m. Wednesday, District 6 officers received a call about a shooting in rear of the 4700 block of Greer and when they arrived, they found a woman who was suffering a gunshot wound. EMS responded and pronounced her dead at the scene.

St. Louis Police says they were able to quickly recover Hampton's vehicle after the shooting and detectives were able to seize a second vehicle, which is considered a vehicle of interest.

SLMPD's Homicide Division is handling the ongoing investigation and Clayton Police are assisting.

A GoFundMe was set up to support Hampton's family with proceeds will be used for funeral expenses and "to help cover this unexpected tragedy and the children who will greatly suffer without her."
