According to the St. Louis City Police Department, 18-year-old Nyla Simmons was dancing on top of a moving Cadillac Escalade when she fell off of it and into the intersection of Compton and Chouteau. Police say she was then struck by a firetruck while responding to the scene of a house fire.
Police Spokesman Mitch McCoy says all individuals involved in the accident are cooperating but did not rule out criminal charges for the driver of the Cadillac.
"It'll be up to our accident reconstruction investigatiors to work with the Circuit Attorney's office."
He adds they do not believe the driver of the SUV did not do anything intentional.
McCoy says the issue of reckless behavior by passengers is not unseen, saying it is more common during "slide shows," and other similar rallies. He adds the police can't stop this behavior on their own.
"We cannot police our way out of this. At some point, parents need to take responsibility for their actions." McCoy adds "we can stop a car and we can tell them to stop, but its a juvenile at some point parents need to be engaged in this conversation."
