ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Missouri firefighters with the Cooper County Fire Protection District recently put their training to good use to save a dog who fell through ice earlier this week.

According to a Facebook post from the Fire Protection District, on Sunday, Feb. 23, fire fighters were called in to rescue Beth, a mastiff, who fell through ice at the Warm Springs Ranch in Boonville, Missouri.

Two firefighters, David Schmidt and Adam Crawford, performed the rescue. Initially, Schmidt attempted to reach the dog first, but encountered difficulties with the thin ice and became limited in his ability to advance on Beth.

Crawford, who was the backup rescuer, reached Schmidt with a backboard and Beth for removal from the ice. The department says in the post that the total time elapsed from the time of the call to Beth's rescue was approximately 24 minutes.

The department says Beth, her dog mom and the firefighters are all doing fine.

The department says in the past week, firefighters with the Cooper County Fire Protection District have rescued two dogs and one calf from iced-over ponds.
