More than 208,000 electric Hyundais and Kias recalled over power loss

Hyundai and Kia have announced a recall for more than 208,000 electric vehicles that could experience a problem where the vehicle loses drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall notice was issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and covers more than 145,000 Hyundai and Genesis vehicles, including some IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 EVs, as well as some Genesis GV60, GenesisGV70 and Genesis G80 models.

Nearly 63,000 Kia EV6 vehicles from 2022 through 2024 were also affected by the recall, according to the notice.

The NHTSA shared that the vehicles’ transistors in a charging control unit might get damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery, “which can result in a loss of drive power.”

Car dealers will be able to inspect and replace the control unit and a fuse if needed. Software updates will also be available for affected vehicles.

Owners whose vehicles were recalled earlier this year to fix the same issue will have to bring their cars back to the dealership, the notice shared.

Owners will be notified by letter in December and January if their vehicle is affected.
