A toddler in California got a hold of an unsecured firearm on Monday and fired it, accidentally shooting and killing their 1-year-old sister, according to authorities.
According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the child, a 3-year-old, got a hold of the “unsecured handgun” sometime before 7:30 a.m. Monday.
The department received a call about the shooting on Monday, and deputies found the child at the home in Fallbrook when they arrived, according to a press release.
The 1-year-old suffered a head injury as a result of the shooting. Deputies transported her to Palomar Hospital, where she was pronounced dead one hour later, police shared.
“The Sheriff’s Department extends our sympathies to the family and those affected by this death. Sheriff’s Homicide investigators are working to gather more information to determine the circumstances of the death,” the sheriff’s department said.
It still remains unclear if the parents were home when the incident occurred. The department shared that there were “no outstanding suspects” at this time.
