Artificial intelligence continues to prove it is more useful than how it was used in the 'Terminator' movies, as it is now being used in Europe to detect sex pests and thugs onboard trains before they attack.
The artificial intelligence is being used by CCTV and was developed by Siemens Mobility, a German railway company, and the technology is already being offered to six rail operators.
‘iCCTV’ is able to analyze passengers’ mannerisms and behavior in order to determine whether or not they pose a threat to others nearby. The technology is used to scan live footage, determining the level of a possible threat.
If a threat is discovered, the system can intervene by producing an onboard announcement that can tell a suspect to back down, that they are on camera, and warn of its ability to contact local authorities.
So far, six UK train operators have been offered the technology, including Transpennine Express, Northern, Chiltern Railways, Great Western Railway, ScotRail, and Southeastern, according to The Times.
According to a report from The Times, the AI will be able to distinguish between drunken behavior among friends and harassment or possible fights. It can even examine the body language of a potential victim who is alone to determine if they are threatened by a possible attacker.
Conventional CCTV can only look at offenses after they have happened, but the new iCCTV will now track them as they happen, eliminating the need for staff to sit through hours of footage.
“Our smart iCCTV technology is capable of spotting risky situations early on, for example automatically recognizing when one person is 'squaring up' to another,” Sambit Bannerjee, the managing director of rolling stock at Siemens Mobility, shared with the DailyMail. “It then triggers an alert to the guard or person in the control center, who can see live video from the carriage and decide whether to make an announcement, intervene themselves or alert the police.”
