Shoppers on government assistance looking to make purchases online now have a new option with Amazon Access, the company's new shopping portal that launched on Monday.

Those with SNAP EBT can now make all their purchases through the new Amazon portal. Amazon Access also has information on Amazon Layaway, a program allowing consumers to pay for items over time, as well as spotlights, discounts, and coupons for any customer on grocery essentials.

This isn't the first time that Amazon has offered services to low-income customers, with some qualifying for Amazon Prime memberships at a discount, as well as accepting SNAP benefits for groceries bought on Amazon Grocery, Amazon Fresh, and Whole Foods.

Nancy Dalton, the head of community partnerships for Amazon Access, shared in a press release that they felt creating the portal was necessary with how the economy is fairing.

"Given the tough economic climate with many facing rising costs on essential needs, we want our customers to know about all the accessible offerings available on Amazon, no matter their circumstances," Dalton said in the press release.

The new portal is different from services Amazon has offered in the past, though, as now it is meant to be a one-stop shop that puts all individual benefits on one site.

Amazon also announced that the discounted Prime membership, priced at $6.99, would be called Prime Access. The subscription service offers consumers a lot, and as of April 2021, there were 200 million Prime members worldwide, according to then-CEO Jeff Bezos.

There was a price hike to the subscription earlier this year, with its annual memberships going from $119 to $139 and its monthly jumping from $12.99 to $14.99. The costs increased due to the company expanding the benefits offered with the membership.
