An FBI agent who was off duty was carjacked on Wednesday afternoon near Capitol Hill, according to local police and the FBI’s Washington field office.
The incident occurred at around 3:45 p.m. when two armed people took the vehicle belonging to the agency, according to police.
The agent was not harmed in the incident.
Police were able to recover the vehicle just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, near the Lincoln Park Area of D.C., authorities shared.
The incident is just the latest in a recent jump of carjackings in the nation’s capital.
The Metropolitan Police Department has reported that over 900 carjacking incidents have happened this year, 77% of which involved guns. That number is more than double what the city saw last year.
Recently, Secret Service agents assigned to President Biden’s granddaughter opened fire on a group of individuals attempting to break into an unoccupied government vehicle.
Wednesday’s incident is still being investigated by the FBI’s Washington field office and the Metropolitan Police Department’s carjacking task force.
No arrests have been made yet, and police have not released details of the suspects, NBC Washington reported.
