Bath and Body Works apologizes for candle design that looked like a KKK hood

Bath and Body Works is apologizing for selling a winter-themed candle that was criticized for its imagery, which had a striking resemblance to the hoods worn by the Ku Klux Klan.

The candle, called “Snowed In,” had a label that showed a paper snowflake with holes cut into it that made some feel it resembled the hood of a KKK member, according to CNN.

Users on Reddit were quick to jump on the resemblance, with some calling it a “klandle” and others saying it was a “Klan Krismas Klandle.”

The KKK hood is considered a hate symbol by the Anti-Defamation League.

Online, those who tried to order the candle online after the criticism erupted said their orders were canceled. Others who were able to purchase them are attempting to resell them, with one going for $180 on eBay. The three-wick candles from Bath and Body Works retail at $24.95.

After it was criticized for the resemblance, Bath and Body Works pulled the candles online and at retail locations, saying in a statement that the design was unintentional, USA Today reported.

“At Bath and Body Works, we are committed to listening to our teams and customers, and committed to fixing any mistakes we make-even those that are unintentional like this one,” a company spokesperson reportedly said in the statement.

“We apologize to anyone we’ve offended, and are swiftly working to have this item removed and are evaluating our process going forward.”
