After giving his first State of the Union address on Tuesday evening, President Joe Biden ventured to Superior, Wisconsin, speaking on the $1 trillion infrastructure bill he is pushing.
“America used to have the best infrastructure in the world,” Biden said. “The best bridges, roads, airports, etc. Now our infrastructure ranks number 13 in the world… you can’t compete for jobs in the 21st century if you don’t fix that.”
The president went on to talk about the funding that would be brought to Minnesota and Wisconsin should his infrastructure bill pass.
“The bipartisan infrastructure law would provide Minnesota an estimated $5.4 Billion and Wisconsin $5.4 billion for highways and bridges,” Biden said. “Cause we sure don’t want you to miss any of the Vikings and Packers games.”
Biden pointed to the Blatnik Bridge that links Duluth and Superior as aging infrastructure, using it as an example of why his bill needs to be passed.
“This bridge also has an outdated design,” Biden said. “Tight curves led to higher than average crash rates on this bridge.”
Under his new law, he says that bridges, roads, and more will be able to get repairs that they desperately need.
“[The Blatnik Bridge] isn’t alone. There are 979 bridges in Wisconsin and 661 bridges in Minnesota in poor condition along with nearly 7,000 miles of highway between your two states that need repair,” Biden said. “And now, after years of talking about infrastructure, we’re finally getting it done.”
