“We need intelligence. We need information. We need to connect the dots.”
That’s the assessment of Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas regarding the continued instances of mass shootings across the United States.
Specifically McCaul, a Republican, made the comments in reference to this weekend’s fatal gun violence in Monterey Park.
“Every one of these cases, and I guarantee we’re going to see it in this one as well, the shooter had warning signs along the way, we just didn’t respond,” McCaul said in a new interview with CNN.
But McCaul wasn’t making the comments amid empty thoughts and prayers. The congressman said he is offering up what he hopes will be a solution, albeit one that doesn’t involve any sort of gun regulation reform.
Rather than infringe on Americans’ Second Amendment rights, McCaul wants to do more to monitor what people do with their First Amendment rights.
“In my judgement we could create a system, and I’ve introduced a bill, that we could take public information on the internet and have an algorithm to stop the threat before it happens,” he said. “That is a smart approach rather than violating Second Amendment rights. I hope we get that passed.”
