A man was shot dead while protecting his family in Texas from home intruders who knocked on their door asking to borrow a plunger, according to police.

The incident happened at the end of last month, on Dec. 30, when Juvenal Antero, 24, was shot dead inside his home, the Dallas Police Department shared in a press release.

Police were quickly called to the scene, where they found Antero shot and attempted life-saving measures. Paramedics were called and brought him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from the injuries.

Antero’s wife, Eizabel, spoke with NBC Dallas-Fort Worth about the home invasion. She told the outlet that she had answered the door moments before her husband was shot and found a man looking to borrow a plunger.

When she said no, another man came forward with a gun and told her and her 4-year-old son to get on the ground.

In an attempt to shut the door on the men, the suspect fired at her son, resulting in Antero jumping in front of him, saving his boy’s life.

“My son keeps asking me, when is my dad going to be alive again? Things that no child is supposed to witness or supposed to ask. I don’t wish this on anyone. There are no words that nobody’s words can comfort me. You know, the detective didn’t let me touch his body or let me hold his hand. He was evidence,” Elizabel said.

She also shared with the station that she was 11 weeks pregnant and that her husband was excited to hear the baby’s heartbeat at an appointment she had that Wednesday.

So far, no arrests have been made in the shooting.

Police shared that their investigation remains ongoing.
