New Disney cruise ship rescues 4 from catamaran off Bermuda before maiden voyage

The new Disney Cruise Line ship, the Disney Treasure, has rescued four people from a catamaran that was taking on water almost 265 miles from Bermuda on Sunday, according to the US Coast Guard.

The US Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City shared the news, saying it coordinated with the cruise ship, which was the closest vessel to the 50-foot catamaran at the time, CBS News reported.

Once it located the stranded vessel, the ship launched a life boat and got all four people off the catamaran, named the Serenity.

The Disney Treasure made the rescue before it had even embarked on its maiden voyage.

A Disney Cruise Line spokesperson shared with CBS News that the Treasure was on its way from the Netherlands to Port Canaveral, Florida, where it will make itself a home.

However, it was diverted to the catamaran in the final leg of its journey at around 11:40 a.m. on Sunday. It arrived at 1 p.m. and saved the four people.

“We are pleased that the Disney Treasure was able to provide aid to the boat passengers in peril. Our crew members worked together on the rescue, skillfully demonstrating their training and commitment to safety,” Disney Treasure Captain Marco Nogara said in the statement.

As for the ship’s maiden voyage, WKMG-TV reports that the Treasure, which has 1,256 staterooms, is scheduled to embark on a seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from Port Canaveral on Dec. 21.
