A man in Texas is facing felony charges after his seven dogs mauled and killed a 71-year-old man, according to police. They added that the attack was unprovoked.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office released a statement on the attack sharing that its office had charged the man who owned the dogs, 47-year-old Samuel Cartwright.

The attack occurred in Fresno, Texas, on July 18 at a grocery store where Cartwright's seven pit bull mix dogs allegedly mauled Freddy Carcia to death, the statement shared.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they attempted life-saving measures on Garcia before airlifting him to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston.

Upon his arrival at the hospital, he was pronounced dead, according to Eric Fagan, the Fort Bend County Sheriff.

"This devastating tragedy didn't have to happen. I extend my deepest condolences to the Garcia family and his neighbors as they adjust to the loss of Mr. Garcia," Fagan said.

Four of the seven dogs were captured by police a day after the attack, but all were in the control of the sheriff's deputies and animal control by Friday.

"Special thanks go out to our deputies, Fort Bend Animal Services Director Rene Vasquez, and Fort Bend District Attorney Brian Middleton for the collaborative work of capturing the dogs and making an arrest," Fagan said.

District Attorney Brian Middleton called Garcia's death needless and "tragic" while warning dog owners that their animals are their responsibility.

"If you have a dangerous dog, it is your responsibility to keep that dog secure to keep the members of our community safe," Middleton said. "If you fail to do that, you will be held accountable."

Cartwright is currently being held in Fort Bend County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
