Five states are holding presidential primaries on Tuesday and while Joe Biden and Donald Trump have presumptively secured their parties' nominations, attention will be on a handful of down-ballot races.
Elections are taking place in Arizona, Florida, Illinois, Kansas and Ohio. Voters in every state but Florida will have the chance to cast a ballot in their state's Republican or Democratic presidential primaries. Florida is holding only a Republican contest, after Democrats canceled their primary and awarded all their delegates to Biden.
While Trump and Biden are easily expected to win their respective contests, a handful of down-ballot races are attracting attention on Tuesday.
Among the top watched is Ohio's pivotal Senate Republican primary, where voters are choosing between Trump-backed businessman Bernie Moreno, state Sen. Matt Dolan, and Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose. The winner will face off with Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in what could be "the decisive contest for control of the Senate," per Politico.
"Ohio is a pivotal race: It's one of three Trump-won states Democrats are defending in November, and because the seat in neighboring West Virginia has all but slipped away with Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin’s retirement, the party has no margin of error," Politico reported.
Illinois voters are also looking at a handful of congressional races, including the conservative 12th District where two candidates who were endorsed by Trump in separate races two years ago -- Darren Bailey and incumbent Mike Bost -- are going head to head. Illinois voters will also pick a nominee to replace Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, who is stepping down after two terms.
Arizona, Florida and Kansas are holding presidential preference elections, where voters cast ballots only for their party's nominee for president. State primary elections, where voters decide a number of issues, are held on different dates -- July 30 for Arizona, August 20 for Florida and August 6 for Kansas.
