Sorry, hot dog fans. Turns out they're not too healthy for you after all.

Well we probably all knew that already, but a study from the University of Michigan has found that for every hot dog you eat, your "healthy life" is shortened by an average of 36 minutes.

The study also found that burgers and macaroni-and-cheese shorten your healthy life by about five minutes, though a handful of cashews can extend your healthy years by 26 minutes

According to the Daily Mail, by a "healthy life," researchers mean "years where you're fairly healthy in general, and aren't dealing with chronic illnesses or disabilities."

"Our analysis also indicated that substituting only 10% of daily caloric intake from beef and processed meat for fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and selected seafood could offer substantial health improvements of 48 minutes gained per person per day and a 33% reduction in dietary carbon footprint," read the study's abstract.
