An investigation has been launched by the National Transportation Safety Board after “severe” turbulence on a Friday flight resulted in a passenger dying.

According to the NTSB, turbulence is believed to be the cause of the passenger’s death on the Bombardier CL30 jet, a private plane flying from New Hampshire to Virginia.

The agency shared that five people were onboard the plane during the flight, three passengers and two crew members.

After taking off from Dillant-Hopkins Airport, the plane was forced to divert to Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, because of the severe turbulence.

The agency did not specify the injuries the passenger sustained on the flight, only saying they were “fatal.” The condition of the other passengers was not shared.

Officials shared that the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder have been collected by the NTSB. Investigators are also working to gather information from those who were on the plane.

CBS News received a statement from the owner of the plane, the internet service provider Conexon. The company specified that the passenger who died was not an employee of the company.

“The reported fatality was not a Conexon employee,” Conexon said. “We ask for privacy for the family members of those involved. We have no further details of the incident at this time.”

The incident is also being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration. A preliminary report is expected within 2-3 weeks.
