A Florida 7-year-old is dead after a July 4th altercation resulted in gunfire.

According to authorities, the tragic incident began with an argument between two groups in the picnic area of Ben T Davis Beach in Tampa, Fla.

Witnesses told Tampa Police that one group of beachgoers was angry at a second group who they claimed was riding jet skis too close to the shore, an area where children were playing in the water.

The groups both ended up in the water arguing, at which time firearms were produced and shots were fired.

The boy who was shot was actually pulled into a truck by his grandfather, but a bullet pierced the vehicle, shooting both the grandfather in the hand and the boy in the head.

Both were taken to the hospital, but while the grandfather is expected to recover, the boy was pronounced dead, according to police.

“Our thoughts are with the family of this innocent child,” Chief Lee Bercaw said in a statement. “Our detectives will work tirelessly until all those involved are identified and arrested.”

Police are hoping witnesses come forward with information about the shooter. If you have information, they urge you to call 813-231-6130 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS (8477).
