A Florida man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after he fired a gun that hit himself in the leg while he was allegedly breaking into a vehicle, prosecutors shared.

Florida State Attorney Ginger Bowden Madden shared in a news release on Monday that Justin McCall, 28, was sentenced on March 6 after facing 13 charges.

On Jan. 5, McCall was arrested and charged with grand theft, burglary to a structure, car burglary, and felony violation of probation, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office shared.

The state attorney’s office shared that McCall was accused of breaking into vehicles from Oct. 29, 2022, to Jan. 4, 2023.

“In addition to stealing miscellaneous items from the vehicles he burglarized, McCall stole a firearm from an unsecured vehicle,” Madden’s office said in the release. “McCall then proceeded to burglarize another vehicle with the stolen firearm in hand. While rummaging through that vehicle, McCall accidentally discharged the firearm and shot himself in the leg, which resulted in McCall pleading for help from the very person whose vehicle he had just burglarized.”

An investigation was launched by the sheriff’s office, and it found that several residential surveillance cameras had allegedly caught McCall on video breaking into the vehicles and homes, according to the release.

The sheriff’s office shared that a homeowner claimed someone had broken into her vehicle, taking her purse inside. She then reported seeing surveillance camera footage from a neighbor, in which McCall was wearing her white Sperry boots, which she kept in her garage.

The sheriff’s office noted that McCall had been convicted of 13 felonies since 2012, six of which were for burglary, four for grand theft, and one for grand theft of a firearm.
