Fonda Quan, the niece of one of the victims of last year’s heartbreaking shooting in Monterey Park, is speaking out about her aunt, My My Nhan, and how her tragedy is being turned into a legacy of giving back.
Remembering her aunt fondly, Quan says that Nhan loved to dance and laugh, especially with her instructor, but after her death, Quan says this past year has been a rollercoaster of grief.
Nhan was at the dance studio in Monterey Park by chance when a gunman decided to open fire and claim the lives of those there.
“Last year, she received a free ticket... that’s why she was there,” Quan shared. “Dance was her life. It’s her second love to family.”
Quan shared that her aunt, who would have turned 66 last year, often gave back to those in her community, and after her passing, they wanted to continue that legacy, doing so by creating the My My Nhan Legacy fund.
“I hope she will be remembered as someone inspiring,” Quan said. “And I hope her inspiration committees for everyone in this community going through different stages of trauma. I’d urge everyone to think about those who were lost, including my aunt, and how every one of them would like to see a better version of our community.”
The fund is focused on giving back to seniors and youth in their community, and this last week, they awarded three high schoolers with a scholarship in honor of Nhan.
Now, Quan says she wants her aunt to be remembered in her community through how she lived her life.
“Continue to live life to the fullest as a way to honor them and seek any resources and help that’s available,” Quan shared.
